In Memory of Saba – Private Performance in Mahour

At the beginning of the performance, the late Hassan Kassaee plays Abolhasan Saba’s Chaharmezrab with the Setar, and after the performance, he says: “Currently, no one in the country can play this piece completely and correctly, and my performance is not without mistakes. Everything I have is from the late Saba, and one must say these things. I hope future generations will speak about us in this way and not undermine their predecessors…”

It is worth mentioning that the poem recited by Mr. Tabatabayi is attributed to Hafez, but it is likely not by Hafez. In a research conducted by Mr. Mohammadreza Zia on this poem, he wrote the following explanations: “This ghazal is not by Hafez for several reasons; it has not appeared in any of the reliable and old versions of Hafez. Anyone familiar with Hafez’s style of poetry knows that it is not in Hafez’s style, and some of its verses (such as the second and last verses) are very weak. And of course, it should be said that this ghazal has appeared in some tasteful corrections of Divan of Hafez, such as Hafez Shamlou, Hafez Ghodsi, and also Hafez Anjavi (in the section of appended poems).”

What a tumult I see in the cycle of the moon,
The whole world I see full of strife and evil.
Everyone seeks a good day from time,
The reason is that every day I see worse.
For the fools, all is sherbet of rosewater and sugar,
The wise man’s nourishment I see all from heart’s blood.
Daughters all have war and conflict with mother,
Sons all I see wishing ill of father.
The Arabian horse is wounded under the saddle,
The golden collar I see all around the donkey’s neck.
Those who do not go to the countryside in spring,
The sweet smell of spring is forbidden to them.
The miser is tight-hearted all year round for wealth,
Saadi is happy every day with friends.
