Abdolnaghi Afsharnia, a radif scholar and Ney player, was born on August 23, 1951, in Dezful, Khuzestan province.
He started music at the age of 12 with local masters and in 1969 he obtained his diploma and in the same year he came to Tehran to continue his studies in statistics.

In 1973, after graduating in this field, he went to the Faculty of Fine Arts of Tehran University and benefited from the presence of masters Noor Ali Khan Boroumand and Dr. Dariush Safwat, as well as Mahmoud Karimi’s free singing class.

Afsharnia started his professional career in music in the Jونس Musical Iran Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Saadi Hosni.

From 1975, as one of the founders of Sheida group, under the leadership of Mohammad Reza Lotfi, he performed on the radio and television during the management of Hushang Ebtehaj ( سایه ).

After graduation, Afsharnia was employed by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, and from 1987 he started teaching music in conservatories and from 1990 in the music faculties of Art, Tehran, Soura, Azad and Jame Elmi Karbordi universities, and was able to have an important impact on training Ney players.

With the return of Mohammadreza Lotfi to Iran in 2006, Afsharnia, as one of the pillars of Sheida Educational Institute and Mirza Abdullah’s مکتب‌خانه, alongside Mohammadreza Lotfi, taught traditional and radif music to enthusiasts and at the same time cooperated with Sheida group.

He also performed improvisation concerts with Mohammadreza Lotfi and Mohammadreza Shajarian, and also performed various performances privately or on stage as a Ney player.
