Esmail Tehrani was born on April 17, 1948, in Tehran. In his childhood, he became interested in Iranian music by listening to Ahmad Ebadi’s setar and Morteza Mahjoubi’s piano on the radio. Also, after watching Hossein Malek’s solo performance on the santur on television, he became inclined towards the santur instrument. After that, with his father’s encouragement, he entered the National Music Conservatory in 1960 and chose the santur as his specialty instrument. During his time at the conservatory, he benefited from masters such as: Mohammad Heydari, Hossein Malek, Hossein Tehrani, Ms. Hagh Nazarian, Davoud Jafari, etc., and graduated from the Music Conservatory in 1967.
In 1968, he started studying composition at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Tehran.
