Houshang Zarif

Houshang Zarif (born December 7, 1938 in Tehran – died March 7, 2020 in Tehran) was an Iranian musician and Tar player.

Houshang Zarif was born on December 7, 1938 in Tehran. After completing elementary school, he enrolled in the National Music Conservatory, under the management of Rouhollah Khaleghi, and benefited from the teachings of artists such as: Moussa Maroufi, Ali-Akbar Shahnazi, Rouhollah Khaleghi, Javad Maroufi and Hossein Tehrani. After graduating in 1958, he was employed by the Ministry of Culture and Arts as a choral and music art teacher. After that, he started teaching in the Iranian Scouting Organization and also started his cooperation as a music art teacher for the blind with the Social Services Organization of the country. He performed music as a player and soloist in various groups and orchestras such as the National Music Orchestra, Saba Orchestra, etc. At the invitation of Hossein Dehlavi, Houshang Zarif taught Tar at the Music Conservatory for 17 years, from 1963 to 1980.

Houshang Zarif passed away on March 7, 2020 at the age of 81 due to cardiac arrest.
