Mohammad Reza Lotfi (January 7, 1947 – May 2, 2014) was a radif scholar, musician, and Iranian composer. He was a prominent player of Tar, Setar, and Kamancheh, as well as a researcher and teacher of traditional Iranian music. He was one of the influential figures in Iranian music who found his way among the masses by creating works such as “Iran ای Saraye Omid”, “Karavan Shahid”, “Brother Bi قرار”, and “Eshgh Danad”.
Lotfi was the founder of the Chavosh Cultural and Artistic Center, Sheida Group, and Mirza Abdullah School, and trained many artists, including Majid Derakhshani, Sedigh Tarif, Hamid Motebassem, and Hossein Behroozinia. In addition to Tar and Setar, he also played Kamancheh, Daf, Ney, and Santur. He was the President of the Fine Arts Campus of the University of Tehran for two years.
Lotfi had experience working with singers such as Taj Esfahani, Gholam Hossein Banan, Mohammad Reza Shajarian, and Shahram Nazeri, and he also introduced singers such as Hengameh Akhavan, Sedigh Tarif, Mohammad Golriz, Mohammad Motamedi, Alireza Shah-Mohammadi, and Amir Asna Ashari to the music community for the first time.
Mohammad Reza Lotfi passed away on the morning of Friday, May 2, 2014, at the age of 67 in Pars Hospital in Tehran due to prostate cancer.
