Mohammad-Reza Shajarian (September 23, 1940 – October 8, 2020) was an Iranian traditional music musician and singer. He was also a calligrapher in Nastaʿlīq script, chairman of the High Council of the Iranian Music House, founder of the Shahnaz group, Del Avaz company, and designer of several musical instruments. He was also active in reciting the Quran, and the Robana prayer was his most famous Quranic recitation.
He started singing from childhood, and due to his talent and good voice, he started to develop his voice under the tutelage of his father, who was a Quran reciter. In 1952, his Quran recitation was broadcast for the first time on Radio Khorasan. In 1959, he went to Mashhad Elementary School and met a music teacher for the first time.
After receiving his diploma from the Higher Education Center, he was employed by the Ministry of Education and started teaching. During this time, he became acquainted with the Santur and started learning this instrument with Jalal Akhbari.
In 1967, he met Ahmad Ebadi in Tehran and also participated in Esmaeil Mehrtaash’s class. In the same year, he went to the Iranian Calligraphers Association to learn calligraphy with Ebrahim Bozari. From 1968, Shajarian continued calligraphy with Hassan Mirkhani and in 1970, he obtained a degree in calligraphy.
Mohammad-Reza Shajarian, four years after he last appeared in front of the camera and announced that he had been suffering from cancer for 15 years, on Sunday, October 4, 2020, due to a decrease in the level of consciousness to the level of deep coma, he was transferred to the intensive care unit of Jam Hospital in Tehran, and finally, on the afternoon of Thursday, October 8, 2020, he passed away at the age of 80.
