If I follow him, he will stir up strife,
If I sit back from seeking him, he will rise in spite.
And if in passing I show a moment of loyalty,
If I fall like dust in his wake, he will flee like the wind.
And if I ask for half a kiss, alas a hundred times,
From the casket of his mouth, sugar will spill.
The deception that I see in your narcissus,
So much honor it will mix with the dust of the path.
Ask for life and patience, for the conjuring wheel of fortune
Will stir up a thousand more wondrous games than this.
The ups and downs of the desert of love are a trap of calamity,
Where is the lion-hearted one who will not shun calamity?
Lay your head on the threshold of surrender, Hafez,
For if you contend, the world will contend with you.
