If I follow him, troubles will arise
If I sit down from seeking, animosity will awaken
And if, on a thoroughfare, for a moment of faithfulness
Like dust, I fall in his footsteps, like wind, he will flee
And if I ask for half a kiss, alas a hundred times
From the casket of his mouth, like sugar, it will fall
I see in your narcissus such deceit
Many honors that mingle with the dust of the path
You desire life and patience, for the conjuring wheel
A thousand games more wondrous than this will stir up
The ups and downs of the desert of love are the snare of calamity
Where is the lionheart who shuns calamity?
Lay your head on the threshold of surrender, Hafez
For if you resist, time will contend
